In one of the most populous countries on earth is the fastest-growing megacity in the world: Dhaka. In the past five decades since Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan, Dhaka has become an economic hub and home to more than 21 million inhabitants – with hundreds of thousands more migrating each year. To keep pace with this trend of rapid urbanization, the city has grown forcefully, chaotically, and organically – outwards and upwards, like an urban jungle. Mass migration, booming populations, and globalized trade are swelling cities worldwide, but these forces are nowhere better concentrated than in Dhaka; offering a unique window into an urban planet soon to come.
